Dermal Fillers
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are small injections of gel, typically made up of hyaluronic acid, that fill in wrinkles and
add volume to soft tissue. You can have dermal fillers in different parts of your face: around the eye, cheeks,
mouth and jawline, as well as lip fillers administered directly into the lip tissue.
How do they work?
Fillers basically restore lost volume to your face and plump areas, so that deep-set lines are smoothed.
Why is this needed?
As we get older our body's collagen and elastin production decreases. The skin becomes thinner and drier, and
develops sags and wrinkles due to the collagen and elastin becoming disconnected, both of which contribute to
the youthful look.
Around the age of 25 your collagen and elastin levels then decline at a rate of about 2% per year, furthermore
after the menopause.
How long do dermal fillers last?
It depends how your body reacts and which hyaluronic acid is used, everyone’s body is different but most dermal
fillers will last between 6-18 months.
Do dermal fillers have side effects?
It’s easy for clients to confuse side effects to reactions, so it’s extremely important to understand what side
effects can be expected.
Temporary side effects – those that are completely normal after facial injections – can include; swelling, redness
and tenderness.
It’s completely normal to experience a little bit of discomfort, redness and bruising after the procedure. Reactions
generally occur immediately after the needle injection and can include; redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising
and tenderness at the injection location.
These reactions are generally mild to moderate and usually disappear shortly after injection, usually resolved a
few days after the injection into the skin.
Do dermal fillers hurt?
There may be a slight discomfort whilst the filler is being injected into the face but we minimise this by applying
anaesthetic numbing cream before treatment.
To provide further relief and alleviate as much pain as possible, our fillers contain a pre-mixed local anaesthetic.
Contraindications and Restrictions
Before using the preparation, it is necessary to make certain that a person has no contraindications, because they
can not only complicate the procedure, but also cause undesirable side effects.
They are as follows:
pregnancy,
breast-feeding,
severe somatic symptom disorders,
acute conditions of chronic diseases,
local inflammation,
dermatological diseases in the injection area,
problems with the functioning of the immune system,
tendency to have allergic reactions,
individual intolerance to the components of the drug,
the likelihood of scar formation,
previous introduction of another gel into the injection area,
infectious diseases,
face polish done less than a month before the procedure.
Procedure
Prior to treatment you will undergo a consultation with the practitioner to discuss the best possible treatment
for the area(s) in question for your desired achievement.
You will also be required to complete a client consultation and medical form both of which will be regarded with
the utmost confidentiality.
All being satisfactory to the practitioner the area(s) will then be numbed ready for treatment, using a topical
numbing cream.
How much filler do I need?
With lip augmentation the key to achieving the best-looking natural results we would always recommend the ‘less
is more’ approach. Thin lips especially would benefit more by using this approach and should be enhanced gradually
over time to create a subtle but natural look and by doing so will maintain the longevity of the filler and overall
effect!
If you are taking aspirin or any other blood thinning medication such as warfarin you would need to consult your
GP beforehand as this would need to be stopped 7 days prior to treatment.
*DO NOT STOP TAKING YOUR MEDICATION WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR GP*
